“Trust yourself. CREATE the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.” ~Golda Meir
FOCUS ON CREATING SYSTEMS RATHER THAN SETTING GOALS
Setting goals is very common practice, yet most people fail to achieve them. Why is that?
Achievements and results take time.
They require positive habits.
They require consistency.
They require effort.
And if you’re a regular reader/viewer of mine you know I’m ALL about goals.
However, there is something far more important: systems.
The Power of Tiny Gains | James Clear
- Set TWO goals for the week. Write down a plan to accomplish those goals. Include checkpoints [progress indicators].
- Do you have a complete SYSTEM to execute your game plan & accomplish your goals? If so, name the main parts. If not, what do you think is missing? Please share in the comments.

Thank you! Thank you!
Great video! I never actually thought about all the little things leading up to my big goal until recently. One of my goals is to build more muscle. I know I have to eat properly, train, recover, and rest properly. My recovery consists of days off, stretching, and occasional massages. I only do this when I’m sore and hurting. Which then wound up in a lot more days off. I started adding recovery after every workout and what a difference it made. I can train more often and go harder or heavier because I have zero to minimum pain.
Great point! I so relate to what you’re saying! For most of my life, I’ve been focused on the big actions that get things done but not holding the details with equal importance. I now realize there are specific little things that make a big difference by getting things going, building momentum, or supporting other things [like recovery does.]
I do have a system to execute my game plan and accomplish my goals. The main parts involve communicating, putting the extra work in and checking in with myself. Self accountability will be a big factor on whether or not I achieve my goals.
A plan that I use now and in the past for my goals is Journaling. It allows you to have an ongoing records of events, thoughts and perspective.
I have a plan to achieve my goals, but not a set date, time, and place to start. I think having those details will help me accomplish my tasks rather than having a vague idea of when I want to do something.
I don’t have a plan. I just think I need to know when I’m doing it and then I will get it done.
1- finish the video you gave me to do
2- catch up on my assignments for school
I plan to set aside an hour each day for my assignments and for the video I plan to just do half tonight and half tomorrow before I go to work
One of my goals is to finish dynamically loading info into a website (I am helping my sister with a big programming project) from a database and making them editable by the end of the week. The parts of this are trying to finish making the editable parts of the employer profile page by the end of today, and then doing the same for the dashboard page tomorrow, and doing one page each day for the weekend/no-school days (today, tomorrow, and saturday), and doing one more page over the course of the week (school will limit the amount of time I can spend)
I do have a system to accomplish my goals. The main parts involve self assessment, self control, and accountability. Self assessment every 30 minutes is the goal and I will start setting a timer. I need to be disciplined enough to have the self control to limit my phone usage when unnecessary, and I need to be accountable and hold my self to a high standard in order to finish my goals.
I do not have a complete system. I need to identify the part of the system that occurs on each day of the week. This will give me a clear target to aim at and hit.
One goal I have is to read, and finish, 6 books this month. One thing I’ve done that has helped me finish 2 of that 6 has been putting it on my to-do list and scheduling it every single day. I write in “personal reading” at a time slot that is free and work hard to complete if.
Also, whenever I notice that I have free time or want to do a low impact/stress activity, I choose to read.
This was excellent!!! I like the creating systems and consistency.
The article is part of my notes now!
I am pretty disciplined in a lot of areas but the ones I am not is where I need to improve.
I will be doing the challenge
Thanks so much!!!
Staying focused on my goals is Something I have struggled with For several years now. This was not the case earlier in my life but some way along the way I became burnt out and complacent.
With lots of extra time on my hands due to the coronavirus I began to reclaim my discipline and reestablish my goals.
This blog has been very helpful in me reinforcing what I started earlier last year.
For me key is writing it down and reviewing it at checkpoints.
Doing what you are inspired to do will lead you to a healthy and enjoyable life. By that point, it won’t become a job if you are happy and enjoy what you are doing as a living!
The system that I have in place is to cover all of the basketball games to help me further my broadcasting experience! I am set to go to every game, all I have to do is to prepare myself and make sure everything is right before I leave my house to go to the games.
